Review #1214 – Barrell Craft Spirits 15yr Bourbon

Review #1214 | Bourbon Review #578 – Barrell Craft Spirits 15yr Bourbon

The Schtick: This is an independent bottling of Dickel spirit, bottled by Barrell spirits in their new line of premium sourced bottlings. Clocking in at 15 years old with an ABV of 52.55, this is the oldest Barrel release I’ve had to date. Let’s dive in.

Distiller: Dickel & Friends (IN + KY)

Bottler: Barrell

Selection: N/A

ABV: 52.55% ABV

Age: 15 Years

Nose: Oak, musty sweetness, corn, orange zest. Creamy sweetness that is almost mistakeable for youth.

Taste: Honey, apples, pears, strong vitamin notes. Chalky, loaded with corn notes and apple cobbler.

Finish: Long, sweet. Lots of corn, oak, cocoa, typical vitamin and orange peel.

Overall: Not a fan of this, but it’s Dickel ramped up to 11. Whatever KY and IN distillate in here is pretty trodden over with that profile. I don’t love it, but I don’t hate it. It’s not my favorite, though. Side by side with a bottle of off the shelf BT, this would be a tough choice.

Thanks for reading!

Wait a minute. If I’m reading the last line correctly the off the shelf standard Buffalo Trace Bourbon could stand toe to toe flavor wise with a higher ABV 15 year age stated Dickel Bourbon. The Buffalo Trace Bourbon either has to be that good or the 15 year Dickel is just rubbish. That 15yo Barrell Bourbon is probably going to sell for 3-4 times the price of the BT. Thanks for being honest and saving me some money. I’d rather have the standard Buffalo Trace then. I’d have lots of money left over to buy something else.

Hey Dean! I think I enjoy BT the same or more. The Barrell isn’t bad, but it isn’t up my alley. While I don’t take price into the rating, I can tell you that every day I would buy a BT or BT pick over the Barrell for the money.
