The Schtick: This is an independent bottling of spirit distilled at Glen Ord, bottled by SMWS after 9 years of aging in an ex-bourbon barrel. This bottling, “Down In The Old Wax Mines” is bottled at cask strength, with no coloring or filtering. Let’s see how it is.

Nose: Fresh baked bread, amaretto, lavender, sweet cream, lightly floral. Some ethanol.

Taste: Hot, a bit of ethanol. Some ash, faint oak, toffee, floral undertones and mild charcoal. Vanilla bean. Good lord it’s hot, though.

Finish: Long, sweet, nutty. Lots of toffee, vanilla, nutty amaretto and baked bread. Lightly floral.

Overall: Good but hot. Some interesting new flavors, but nothing unique or extra compelling.
