The Schtick: This is a revisit of a spirit from Origen Raiz that I’ve tried once before, and had the opportunity to revisit on a fresh palate. This past month’s Maguey Melate box came with a 50ml sample of this, so the stage was set just right for this Origen Raiz Mezcal Review. Distilled from Cenizo on Copper, this comes to us as a brand headed by Asis Cortes. If you’re not familiar with Asis Cortes and his upcoming Dixeebe Mezcal project, a collaboration between him and his father Valentin, it’s worth a look. Anyways, back to the Mezcal. Let’s get to it.
Distiller: Ignacio Grijalva Paulino
Bottler: Origen Raiz
Brand: Origen Raiz
ABV: 48% ABV
Nose: Sweet and roasty, lots of pineapple, apple, roasted corn and pepper. Lovely minerality here, faintly floral, some nice cream.
Taste: Thin to medium mouth feel on the palate. Sweet honey, light almond, nice pepper and a papaya note that is really enticing. Faint pepper, light bubblegum.
Finish: Long, rich and loaded with fruit and sweet notes. Pineapple, mango, papaya, vanilla cream, faint bubble gum.
Overall: Love and complex, this is really something. I’m all over it.
