Review #1658 – Driftless Glen Single Barrel Rye Mythical Hydration Selection

The Schtick: This is a single barrel of rye distilled at Driftless Glen and selected by Mythical Hydra-tion. This was dumped from Barrel #186 and was bottled at bottle proof with no filtering. Let’s dive in.

Review #1658 | Rye Review #696

Distiller: Driftless Glen

Bottler: Driftless Glen

Brand: Driftless Glen

Selection: Mythical Hydration

ABV: 62.1% ABV

Age: 4 Years

Nose: Rich berry, blueberry mainly, some fresh cut oak, honey, lavender, hint of orange peel, light jasmine. Fruity, herbal, but not minty, peppery or dill forward.

Taste: Sweet on the palate, with some welcome richness. Lovely raspberry, honey, blueberry, light caramel note. Touch of pepper. Medium mouth feel. Heat is a hair forward, but well behaved.

Finish: Long finish, bit of heat, but nice oak component. Fresh baked bread, almost a sourdough quality, laced with vanilla bean, tobacco, bold rye spice and some blueberry preserve.

Overall: Unique, very off profile for a rye in general, interesting and complex. I’m a fan of this one, and it’s really enjoyable to be watching these barrels gain a bit of age each time I take a dive back in to taste them.
