Review #1759 – Smokehead Sherry Bomb

The Schtick: So far we’ve tasted Smokehead and Smokehead High Voltage. You know that adage about all the best things coming in threes, and Smokehead recognizes that. Their third expression, Sherry Bomb, seeks to deliver exactly what the name implies with maturation in Oloroso casks. Sherry bomb is very much a common phrase in the scotch enthusiasts dictionary these days, referring to something thats heavily sherried. In my experience, wine typically plays well with peat, so I’m looking forward to giving this a go. Let’s get after it.

Bottler: Smokehead

Brand: Smokehead

Selection: N/A

ABV: 48% ABV

Age: NAS

Nose: Nutty at first, loaded with berry and caramel before the ash sets in. Ash, pepper, moss and brine storm in to pair with the initially sweet and fruity nose.

Taste: Sweet on the palate, with a moderate mouth feel, the heat is subdued. Sweet red berries, toffee, burnt sugar and minerality are immediate players. Some more time on the palate reveals burning wood, some ash, a nutty wine sweetness and some stewed fruits. Pretty complex, so far a good combination of sweet fruits and brash smoke character.

Finish: Long ashy finish with hints of sweet berry, some anise, syrupy honey, toffee and ash. Longer finish than I’d expect for the proof, which is welcome. No ethanol to foul things.

Overall: Overall, I quite like this. The High Voltage is easily my favorite of the bunch, but this bottling has quite a bit of oomph, and delivers a well balanced profile of syrupy sherry notes and aggressive peat notes. The peat keeps things from being too fruit forward or sweetness dominated, and the wine character helps lend a lot of complexity to the peat profile. Very good stuff.

Thanks for reading!
