Review #246. Smooth Ambler Old Scout AWS Long Nine

Review #246 – Smooth Ambler Old Scout 9yr SiB Long Nine, Annapolis Whiskey Society

Whiskey Network Review #246 | /r/Bourbon Review #135 – Smooth Ambler Old Scout 9yr Single Barrel, “Long Nine”, 94.8pf | 47.4%ABV

This is MGP’s “high rye” mashbill, with a rye content of 36% compared to the 21% in Slandy’s Select. I forgot to include that information in last nights review but here it is for comparison. Let’s dive in.

Nose: Peppery, spicy, clove forward, sweet cream, vanilla, molasses

Taste: Sharp spicy clove, pepper, molasses, brown sugar, some wood notes,

Finish: Medium to long, nice balance of oak and brown sugar

Overall: I’m a bit less let down by this dram but it reminds me of a more robust Wild Turkey Rare Breed. I like that there is more intense spice characteristic and there’s a really nice mouthfeel despite the lowered proof. I’m going to rate this a step above the Slandy’s select but I think this is as high as any MGP bourbon I’ve tried before has reached. It’s delicious and full of character.

Thanks for reading!
