Review #301 – Parker’s Heritage Collection No.9
Whiskey Network Review #301 | /r/Bourbon Review #171 – Parker’s Heritage Collection No.9, 108pf | 54.0% ABV
This review took place before the unfortunate passing of Parker Beam.
The Schtick: This is an 8yo malt whiskey that is released as the 9th edition of the Heaven Hill line known as Parker’s Heritage Collection. $5 from each sale goes to benefit ALS, which legendary distiller Parker Beam suffers from.
Since this is review 301 and I’ve been working to change up my reviews a smidge (for the better) for all reviews going forward. They will have a bit more information to serve as context for the reader. I’ve also removed my disclosure at the tail of reviews about price since we’ve all seen enough of that for the last 50 reviews or so. But, alas, nothing is ever gone for good so don’t tempt me to bring it back.
Style: Malt Whiskey
Producer: Heaven Hill
Proof: 108pf | 54.0% ABV
Age: 8 Years
Mashbill: 65% Malt, 35% Corn
Source: /r/scotchswap sample
Nose: Sweet buttery caramel, vanilla, corn, bread, fruity and bright. The malt lends a lot of sweet buttery bread notes to the nose.
Taste: Medium oiliness, no heat. Sweet corn, vanilla, caramel, toffee, light citrus. Very sweets forward.
Finish: Long, mild heat rising. Sweet cornbread and buttery toffee.
Overall: This is a very sweet dram but it seems to balance well with the dough and bread notes and the corn. I notice corn here more than I expected to given the mash but I think this is in part to the sweetness. This is a surprising dram to me – I didn’t know what to expect and I came away pretty impressed at how much I enjoyed it. I’m going to give this a Rank 7.
As for other drams I’ve enjoyed more, and less: this is really the first malt whiskey I’ve had in a long while so I won’t offer up any comparisons. My practice of offering drams I find similar given the ranking will resume with my next review.
