Review #315 – Big Peat Christmas 2012
Whiskey Network Review #315 | /r/Scotch Review #128 – Douglas Laing’s Big Peat Christmas 2012, 107.2pf | 53.6% ABV
Distiller: Various (Blend of Islay distilleries)
Bottler: Douglas Laing (IB)
Release: Winter, 2012
ABV: 53.6% | 107.2 pf
Nose: Like the name suggests, “Big Peat”! Pepper, peat smoke, vegetal funk, if creamy vanilla. A one two punch of peppery, vegetal peat and sweet sweet vanilla.
Taste: Very sweet. The smoke is here also, and it’s definitely intense but it is well balanced with the extra sweetness. It’s like a smoky vanilla cake. Or pound cake. Peppery and vegetal peat takes a backseat. Mouth feel is on the thinner side but still good. Proof works well here.
Finish: Long, only mild heat, very sweet still but the smoke grows. Very smokey here but more favoring the vegetal, rather than ashy or cigarette like.
Overall: I really like the dynamic nature of this one. Massive peat, pepper and smoke that gives way to sweet pound cake only to surrender once more to the smoke. I really enjoyed this dram, and I’m going to rate it Rank 7 as a result.
1 | Disgusting | So bad I poured it out.
2 | Poor | I wouldn’t consume by choice.
3 | Bad | Multiple flaws.
4 | Sub-par | Not bad, but many things I’d rather have.
5 | Good | This is a good, solid daily.
6 | Very Good | A cut above.
7 | Great | Well above average
8 | Excellent | Really quite exceptional.
9 | Incredible | An all time favorite
