Review #33 | /r/Scotch Review #12 – Compass Box Flaming Heart 15th Anniversary
The Schtick: This expression is the Flaming Heart 15th Edition which is a blend of some pretty impressive whiskeys clocking in at a total 48.9% ABV:
- 27.1% 30yr Caol Ila from American Oak Hogshead Ex-bourbon casks.
24.1% 20yr Clynelish from “Rejuvenated” casks. I guess this are old ex-bourbon barrels they scrape up and re-char.
10.3% 7 Year blend of Highland Malts in oak barrels with French oak heads. This is a blend of Clynelish, Teaninich and dailuaine malts. Oooooh a blend within a blend.
38.5 14 Year caol Ila from ex-bourbon casks
Bottler: Compass Box
ABV: 48.9% ABV
Age: N/A (Blend of Ages, so NAS)
Mashbill: Single Malt (Barley)
Nose: There’s some smoke with light light peat, followed by what seems to be pear and apple notes with some fruity vanilla. There’s a light honey sweetness as well. I like the blend of smoke and sweet and quite frankly it’s delicious. Good balance of both.
Taste: There’s more vanilla on the tast ebuds than the nose but there’s also more smoke. A little less fruit and a little less honey but the vanilla and smoke marry very well. I’m impressed for a blend, but this is what CB does and I have to say they do it well.
Finish: The finish is medium long with lots of smoke. There’s a little char too, I feel like I’ve licked a campfire log but I don’t dislike it. It’s warming with a slight abrasiveness, but nothing too off putting.
Overall: I’m a big fan. I haven’t spent a whole lot of time with blends this was something special.
