Review #331 – Benriach Septendecim 17yr Heavily Peated

Whiskey Network Review #331 | /r/Scotch Review #142 – Benriach Septendecim 17yr Heavily Peated , 92pf | 46.0% ABV

Distiller: Benriach

Mash: Single Malt (100% Barley)

ABV: 46% ABV | 92 pf

Age: 17yr

Nose: Smokey, sweet peat. dough, pepper, mild iodine, creamy vanilla

Taste: Thin mouthfeel, peat and mild lemon zest and pepper. Faint marmalade. Hint of vanilla. Oddly astringent. Like, really astringent.

Finish: Short, mild heat, really thin and disappointing here. Mild peat, pepper, faint salinity.

Overall: I wanted to like this but I just was not impressed. It was thinner than I expected, especially for the proof and it was all astringency, heat and pepper. Normally this would be good with some more complex variety but it felt very one dimensional. I’m giving this a Rank 5 – it was just fine which was disappointing. I think it might just not be my cup of tea.

Thanks for reading!
