Review #413. Compass Box Spice Tree Extravaganza

Review #413 | /r/Scotch Review #163 – Compass Box Spice Tree Extravaganza

The Schtick: This is a revamped product that uses the same concept as OG Spice Tree, but uses significantly older components and also integrates more sherry cask whiskey into the mix. You can download a sexy fact sheet here

The internet is awesome, though, and tells us what the deal is on Compass Box’s site:

  • 32.6% FF Sherry matured Glen Ord
  • 17.2% FF Sherry matured Benrinnes
  • 02.6% ex-Bourbon matured Alta Bhainne
  • 27.7% “Light / Medium Toasted Hybrid Cask” matured “Highland Malt Blend”
  • 04.3% “Refill Hybrid Cask” matured “Highland Malt Blend”
  • 15.6% “Heavy Toast Hybrid Cask” matured “Highland Malt Blend”

So…we know what just about half of this whiskey is. The rest is, well, who knows. Let’s see how it tastes.

Distiller: Various

Bottler: Compass Box Whiskey Company

ABV: 46% ABV | 92 pf

Age: NAS

Filtering | Coloring: NCF | Natural Color

Source: /r/scotchswap sample

Nose: Intensely aromatic. Big fruit notes like apple, pear, some faint melon. Sweet vanilla, honey, maybe a faint hint of raspberry and jammy cherry. It’s very “bright” and effervescent.

Taste: Nice mouthfeel, proof is well behaved but still high enough to give this a nice, oily mouthfeel. Sweet apples, pears, raspberry. Faint cocoa, vanilla is huge. There’s a hint of caramel but this is very fruit forward. I’m surprised there isn’t any Clynelish in here because it’s almost waxy fruit. Faint astringency, but much more balanced and complex than regular Spice Tree.

Finish: Medium in length but surprisingly hot. This is kind of surprising. Some sulfur here too. It’s nice and fruity still but less pleasant than the palate.

Overall: This was going great places until the finish struck. It wasn’t awful or really devastating but I thought this might reach higher than the 6 I’m going to give it. The nose and palate were delightful but with it leaving the taste behind that it does, I wouldn’t group it with other whiskeys that have scored into the 7 category.

Thanks for reading!

Thanks for putting this out there. I think I won’t be buying this if it comes out. By me it is around $120 and I would expect it to be a little more higher rated. I have the regular Compass Box Spice Tree and I taste a lot of Clynelish in it. I’m surprised it isn’t in this batch either.
