Review #52. Dalwhinnie Distillers Edition 2014

Review #52 | /r/Scotch Review #21 -Dalwhinnie Distiller’s Edition (2014)

The Schtick: This is the annual, sort of limited, Distiller’s Edition release from Diageo featuring Dalwhinnie spirit. The standard OB is 15 years, this sees an additional 24 months finishing in oloroso sherry casks.

Distiller: Dalwhinnie (Diageo)

Bottler: Dalwhinnie

ABV: 43% ABV

Age: 17 Years

Distilled: 1997

Bottled: 2014

Batch: DSV312 LE

Maturation: ex-bourbon | Oloroso finishing

Mashbill: Single Malt (Barley)

Source: Bottle, Purchased

Nose: Absolute honey overload. A funky baking bread note. Very little sherry, a lot of spice and the faint scent of marketing.

Taste: Blast of floral honey. There’s a whole lot of honey. Spice kicks you in the face, which is weird given the lack of sherry here. This dram isn’t peppery, bitter or astringent, it’s just….spicy. Not quite sure how to describe it. It lingers on my tongue. There’s a lot of influence from the oloroso here.

Finish: Long, complex and even spicier. What is going on here? I’m left with lot’s of flowers, honey and baked bread.

Overall: This is interesting. I don’t love it, but it’s unique.

Thanks for reading!
