Review #579 | /r/Bourbon Review #330 – Knob Creek Single Barrel Reserve, Dekalb Bottle House Bourbon Wars – DBH Strikes Back
The Schtick: Knob Creek Single Barrels have long been a product easily available at most stores. In the last several years, picking private barrels of various ages has become more commonplace. Picks between 9 and 16 years of age have been popping up with great regularity and I’ve taken it upon myself to try a variety and see how they fare. Some time ago, Knob Creek exhibited what may have been the largest barrel variation commonly agreed on in the bourbon community with some barrels ranging from wretched to godly. It has been my feeling that, as of late, the overall quality of these barrels being picked has risen, adding a slightly higher floor than existed before.
This is a store pick done by DBH during a series of picks they release for the “Bourbon Wars”. It is named “DKB Strikes Back” and is their second pick done in the Bourbon Wars annual series. There is no date or barrel information, so we have to assume it is just 9 years old, as that is the default age statement.
ABV: 60% ABV
Age: 9 Years (Default Label Age
Nose: Sweet honey, toffee, raspberries and cream, faint cocoa. Really prominent in the caramel department
Taste: Sweet peanut brittle, honey, toffee and some pepper. Little oaky but really heavy peanut brittle and toffee influence here.
Finish: Medium length, really nice caramel here while not delving into too sweet or too peppery.
Overall: Definitely a little more youthful than some other picks but it’s nice and balanced – lots of sweet with some spice and oak to compliment.
