Review #615 | /r/Scotch Review #206 – Highland Park Full Volume
The Schtick: “For musicians, amps and equalisers maintain critical balance at high volume by fine-tuning musical frequencies – at Highland Park, our Master Whisky Maker, Gordon Motion, does a similar job.
FULL VOLUME was created using 100% ex-bourbon casks rather than our traditional sherry-seasoned ones. During 1999, a combination of 481 casks – 200 litre barrels and 250 litre hogsheads – were filled at strengths of between 63.6% and 63.7%. The whisky was filtered at just over 4oC and delivers flavours of creamy vanilla and sweet citrus fruits from the bourbon casks, balanced by Highland Park’s characteristic aromatic smokiness.” – Highland Park Website
Distiller: Highland Park
Bottler: Highland Park
ABV: 47.2% ABV
Nose: Honey, vanilla, butter cream. Lemon pastry. Salt, pepper, some faint smoke. Like dessert, on a picnic, by the ocean.
Taste: Medium richness, no heat. Nice and sweet – loads of vanilla, buttercream, cake batter, faint salinity, nice pepper note and some subtle peat.
Finish: Medium to long, much more peat here. Smoky, earthy, ashy salinity and smokiness balance pretty well with vanilla undertones.
Overall: For being something that is marketed as bold, aggressive, Spinal Tap-ish, this is none of those things. This is, however, a great whiskey. I like it quite a bit.
