Review #623 | /r/Scotch Review #210 – Bruichladdich Octomore 6.1
The Schtick: “Titanic amounts of peat but with a light, delicate complexity and a beguiling finesse. Young, yet eminently mature, it defies us. It remains an enigma. We embrace that.
Here, we pay tribute to its pedigree, to the land from which it came and the raw materials that gave it life: Octomore Scottish Barley.
We believe challenging convention matters.” – Bruichladdich Website
ABV: 57% ABV
Age: 5 Years
Additional Info: Peated to 167ppm, pre-distillation
Nose: Lemon lime soda, vanilla, honey and buttercream. Faintly ashy smoke with a nuanced level of meaty, BBQ smoke.
Taste: Thick, rich and viscous. Vanilla buttercream is dominant, followed by big salinity and rich pepper. It’s smoky and ashy, with faint bbq notes. If someone were to ask me what smoked butterscotch tastes like – I would be tempted to offer this dram as an example.
Finish: Medium in length, no heat. Peaty, ashy, burning telephone pole.
Overall: Really great, but oddly restrained for an Octomore expression. Very enjoyable, nonetheless.
