Review #629 | /r/Scotch Review #213 – Ardbeg Kelpie Committee Release
The Schtick: This is the higher proof release of Ardbeg’s Kelpie bottling.
“It’s the Committee Release of Ardbeg Kelpie, a single malt released in 2017 having been matured in casks made from virgin Black Sea oak and more traditional bourbon casks. The Committee Release is bottled at the higher strength of 51.7% ABV (while the standard Ardbeg Kelpie is bottled at 46% ABV).” – Master of Malt
ABV: 51.7% ABV
Nose: Floral and sweet. Lots of vanilla, confectioners sugar and faint peat pairing with oceanic salinity.
Taste: Lime and honey. Really light and floral – much more brine on the palate than the nose. Ashy telephone pole peat rolls in at the tail end.
Finish: Medium length, faintly lactic milk, some astringency followed by a floral finish.
Overall: This was nice but weirdly light – even with the elevated proof. The astringency on the finish wasn’t really impressive, but the rest of the dram was solid.
