Review #640 | /r/Scotch Review #218 – Laphroaig 16yr Signatory Vintage 1997 Cask Strength Series KLWines Selection
The Schtick: This massively jumped and complex title boils down to the fact that this is an Independently Bottled Laphroaig cask that was selected and bottled in cooperation with KLWines in California. It is 16 years old and was matured in an ex-bourbon cask, bottled at cask strength.
Bottler: Signatory Vintage
ABV: 55.2% ABV
Age: 16 Years
Maturation: Hogshead #3365
Bottle #: 186/283
Selection: K&L Wines
Source: Bottle, Tasting
Nose: Rich pepper, earthy peat, death. The smell of death and dying on an ocean beach. Vanilla butter cream, creme brulee, lemon meringue. Absolutely rich with peat, complexity and deep dessert notes.
Taste: Rich, rich and complex. No heat. Salinity, pepper, vanilla, creme brulee, umami, ocean side death. Earthy tobacco, musty funk, butterscotch, meatiness. Lemon lime custard.
Finish: Long, ashy and peppery. Super rich, loaded with meaty peat, vanilla and lemon meringue. The pepper continues long into the finish, balancing beautiful.
Overall: Endgame material. Pack it up, boys.
