Review #702 | /r/Scotch Review #239 – Caol Ila 22yr Cadenhead’s Small Batch 1991
The Schtick: This is an ex-bourbon matured bottling of Caol Ila spirit distilled in 1991 and bottled in 2013. It is bottled at cask strength.
Distiller: Caol Ila
ABV: 52.2% ABV
Age: 22 Years
Nose: Honey, biscuits, apple butter. Salt and pepper, faint smoke, butter cream. Nice minerality.
Taste: Medium length, some heat. Apple butter note here persists. Salty with some nice pepper and a good blast of ashy smoke. The smoke and the salt and pepper components really balance the sweetness here. Very nice.
Finish: Long, dry and ashy. Nice oak presence, good vanilla backbone plays well with the growing smoke.
Overall: Complex and ever changing, this progresses from sweet and fruity to dry and smoky in a really great way.
