Review #723 | /r/Bourbon Review #245 – Caol Ila 20yr AD Rattray Bottling
The Schtick: This is a 20 year old, cask strength, ex-bourbon matured bottling from A.D Rattray featuring Caol Ila distillate. It was sent to me as a mystery sample and I have filled in the relevant info post reveal after tasting live in the Whiskey Network Discord and getting the reveal there.
Distiller: Caol Ila (Islay)
Bottler: A.D. Rattray
ABV: 50.2% ABV
Age: 20 Years
Number of Bottles: 194
Additional Info: NCF | NCA
Nose: Brash peat, lemon lime, bbq, meaty. sweet buttercream.
Taste: Thick mouthfeel, oily. Heat is apparent but not punishing, lime returns with strong oak presence. Vanilla butter cream, faint stewed fruits, cocoa, toffee.
Finish: Medium, but crisp. drying, sweet cocoa, toffee, vanilla, ashy peat and a notable lack of heat here
Overall / Guess: I first thought this was Octomore but it’s not the same profile. Ashiness leads me to believe Ardbeg or Caol Ila. Big cocoa/ vanilla is interesting. I’m guessing it’s an Islay, 10-14 years, 52-57% ABV, Ardbeg origin. Unsure of OB or IB but I’m certain it’s scotch. Guessing Alligator, Supernova, or Grooves if I had to make a product guess.
Reveal: Caol Ila 20yr AD Rattray – really interesting! This was really pretty delightful even though I missed it in the end. Oh well. The flavors here were exceptional and the bourbon cask lent tons more cocoa and vanilla than I expected. Super delicious.
