Review #729 | /r/Bourbon Review #248 – Glenlivet 21yr “Archive”
The Schtick: This was sent to me as a blind mystery and it was sampled live in the Whiskey Network Discord where I also got the reveal. I have filled in the relevant info here for convenience.
Distiller: The Glenlivet
Bottler: The Glenlivet
ABV: 43% ABV
Age: 21 Years
Nose: Honey, leather, sherry. Nutty and funky wine notes. Toasted almonds, toffee and some nice tobacco.
Taste: Medium mouthfeel, mild heat. Sweet sherry, toasted almonds and vanilla toffee. Faint pepper, with a nice fruity undertone.
Finish: Medium length, nice and mild here on the heat, with lots of pepper, sweet nutty toffee and faint cocoa.
Overall / Guess: This was really nice! I enjoyed it a lot. It has nice sherry character and a good presence on the palate. I’m going to guess that this is a 10-14 year old release from one of the more standard sherry profile distillers. Macallan or GlenDronach perhaps. There was some heat on the palate, so I’m guessing 48% – 53% ABV.
Reveal: The Glenlivet 21yr Archive. Wow! Swing and a miss, pretty blatant on this one. I definitely confused the thicker mouthfeel for higher proof, and was a bit off on the age. I was very impressed at how much sherry character was present here – something I didn’t realize we could see from Glenlivet outside of IB releases. Very nifty.
