Review #732 | /r/Scotch Review #249 – Laphroaig 10 Year Cask Strength Batch 008
The Schtick: This was sent to me as a blind mystery and it was sampled live in the Whiskey Network Discord where I also got the reveal. I have filled in the relevant info here for convenience.
Distiller: Laphroaig (Islay)
ABV: 59.9% ABV
Age: 10 Years
Nose: Rich, vegetal peat. Honey, butter, toffee, caramel and earthy pepper. Faint chemical notes.
Taste: Medium thickness, some heat, vegetal peat and sweet sugar. Fruity but more earthy than fruity. Mineralogy with some faint sherry character.
Finish: Long, with some heat. Earthy bandages, nice proof and smokiness.
Overall / Guess: I like it. Some heat, but more smoke than sweet although the sweet is present. Guessing Lagavulin or Ardbeg at 50-55% ABV and 10-13 years of age
Reveal: Laphroaig 10yr Cask Strength Batch 008. I’m a little disappointed I didn’t pick up on the bandage-y note as being Laphroaig, since it was apparent and that’s a big thing I think of when I think Laphroaig, but still not too shabby overall. A lot of people have been telling me this batch isn’t as good as 006 or 007 and I have to agree with them. I really enjoyed 007, and gave that a 7/10 but feel this missed the mark a bit. Still good though and very much earns its 6/10.
