Review #742-#743 – Old Grand Dad Bottled in Bond (Beam vs National Distillers)

Review #742+743 | /r/Bourbon Review #411+412 – Old Grand Dad Dusty Showdown

The Schtick: Thanks to a friend that scored well locally, I was able to side by side two different no longer produced Old Grand Dad Bottled in Bond releases. One of them is a 1992 BiB that was distilled by National Distillers and the other is a 1993 release distilled and bottled by Beam.

###Old Grand Dad Bottled In Bond, 1993 Beam

Distiller: Beam

Bottler: Beam

ABV: 50% ABV

Age: NAS (Bottled in Bond dictates 4+ years, though)

Source: Bottle

Nose: Honey, caramel, ethanol. Faintly nutty, rich toffee. Faint tobacco, pepper and some grain notes.

Taste: Medium mouthfeel, some heat – but far less than expected for the proof. Caramel, grain, almost mildly fruity. Cherries, figs, passion fruit.

Finish: Medium length with mild heat. Tobacco, caramel and pepper finish us off.

Overall: This was very nice, although I found some astringency in the palate I didn’t love. The nose was easily the best part for me, and it’s really not a fair fight against the OGD BiB on shelves today.

###Old Grand Dad Bottled In Bond, 1992 National Distillers

Distiller: National Distillers

Bottler: Beam

ABV: 50% ABV

Age: NAS (Bottled in Bond dictates 4+ years, though)

Source: Bottle

Nose: Super sweet, toffee, butter scotch, creamy vanilla, no heat whatsoever. Sweet, almost like syrupy PX, and loaded with cream.

Taste: Thick, rich and loaded with butter scotch. No heat again, despite the proof. Honey, musty tobacco, again it has a lot of PX characteristics. Very syrupy and rich.

Finish: Long, sweet and rich. Caramel and butterscotch carries the finish for a long while before fading.

Overall: I really liked the 1993 Beam until I had this – the difference is night and day. The lack of heat, the significantly thicker mouthfeel and the syrupy character made this a real treat to enjoy.
