Review #760 | /r/Bourbon Review #421 – High West’s A Midwinter’s Night Dram, Act 2
The Schtick: This came to me by way of a blind sample. It is worth noting that I have had this before, already, and the original is posted here. I tasted this dram blind, however, and reported my tasting notes in the official Whiskey Network Discord server where I got the reveal and then compiled my notes into a document for convenience. Pretty interesting revisiting something you’ve had before, but blind.
Distiller: Various (Blend)
Bottler: High West
ABV: 49.3% ABV
Nose: Honey, toffee, oak, vanilla, pears.
Taste: Medium mouth feel, fruity (underlined in my notes). Mild sourness, oaky, pepper, tobacco, vanilla, passion fruit.
Finish: Medium, mild heat, fruity, oaky, pepper and toffee.
Overall + Guess: This was a nice and fruity dram, not too oaky. Nice toffee and spice. I’m kinda not sure where to put my finger though. Guessing 8-12 years old, bourbon, 43% – 48% ABV. Maybe Eagle Rare 10?
Reveal: High West’s A Midwinter’s Night Dram Act 2. Whew. Swing and a miss big time. I’m a bit disappointed that I missed the rye spice, and the port influence, although I found very little in this Act even when reviewing not blind. Still goes to show the merits of reviewing blind and I relish the opportunity to continue being bamboozled.
