Review #775 | /r/Bourbon Review #428 – Witherspoon Texas Bourbon Distillers Edition
The Schtick: This was a blind sample that was sent to me. I reviewed it, then got the reveal in order to fill in relevant details here. For other blind reviews, hop on over to the Whiskey Network Discord server and join the chatter.
Distiller: Witherspoon (Texas)
Bottler: Witherspoon
ABV: 52.5% ABV
Age: NAS
Source: Sample
Nose: Vanilla, caramel, sawdust. Pretty muted. Really heavy in the caramel department.
Taste: Medium mouth feel, really pretty sweet. Wet grass, oak, tobacco, passion fruit, clove.
Finish: Long and complex, clove, tobacco, honey, vanilla and oak. Some more passion fruitiness.
Overall / Guess: This grew really nice after the nose, which was a little muted. The wet grass note was interesting but it didn’t scream craft. All in all, the oak presence was good, so it doesn’t seem super young. I’m guessing this is something MGP sourced, 6-9 years old, 53% – 58% ABV. I really enjoyed it. Maybe this was a younger SAOS single cask, or a non wheated Heaven Hill sourced bourbon. Either way, I enjoyed it.
Reveal: Witherspoon Texas Bourbon, Distiller’s Edition, 62.5% ABV. Didn’t really expect this, but I gotta hand it to them – this isn’t bad at all. I enjoyed it thoroughly. It’s also exciting that we’re getting some pretty good bourbon out of Texas now.
