Review #831 – Laphroaig Cairdeas 2017: Cask Strength Quarter Cask

Review #831 | /r/Scotch Review #280 – Laphroaig Cairdeas 2017: Cask Strength Quarter Cask

The Schtick: This is an annual, limited release of Laphroaig’s Cairdeas line. This is the 2017 release, which features a cask strength expression based on their core line product: Laphroaig Quarter Cask. In the past we have been treated to:

  • 2012, Origins
  • 2013, Port finished
  • 2014, Amontillado finished
  • 2015, Throwback production release
  • 2016, Madeira finished

Let’s see how this stacks up. For reference, I have already reviewed this year’s cairdeas, the Laphroaig Cairdeas 2018: Fino Cask

Distiller: Laphroaig

Bottler: Laphroaig

ABV: 57.2% ABV

Age: NAS

Source: Sample

Nose: Rich cream, peat, ashy iodine smoke, fish, pepper.

Taste: Medium, no heat, cream, pepper, earthy, iodine, ashy peat. Really less abrasive than expected. I was expecting a punch in the kisser on this one.

Finish: Short, oaky, cream, pepper, peat.

Overall: Sort of disappointed in this. I went into this expecting a larger, more robust, potentially brasher version of the ubiquitously available Quarter Cask. I actually think I like the original Quarter Cask more. This is definitely not bad, in any way, but I’m also not really impressed, either.

Thanks for reading!
