The Schtick: This was a review done courtesy of a friend and I reviewed it live on the Whiskey Network Discord server, then got the reveal in order to fill in relevant details here.
gesundheit! Ardbeg’s Airigh Name Beist is a one off, limited edition offering that was distilled in 1990 and bottled in 2006.
ABV: 46% ABV
Age: 16 Years
Nose: Vanilla, cream, sour fruits. Lactic, barn yard. Faintly smoky, lemon tart, pepper.
Taste: Medium, some heat, rich vanilla. Ashy smoke, burning wood, pepper, lemon, apples and pear cobbler. Faint rotting fish.
Finish: Long, ashy, some heat, burning, charred wood. Vanilla, some molasses. Not super complex here but boy is it peaty.
Overall + Guess: I really enjoyed this but wish there was a little more going on in the palate and the finish. The ashy smoke is robust, and delicious, though. I’m guessing this is an Islay dram, notably Ardbeg or Kilchoman, 8-12 years of age, little to no sherry influence, 53% – 58% ABV. It could be Laphroaig, but I don’t get the iodine and bandages I would expect. 6/10
Reveal: Ardbeg Airigh Nam Beist – a 16 year old Ardbeg distilled in 1990 and bottled in 2006. It is bottled at 46% ABV so I whiffed hard there but I’m pretty pleased to have gotten the distillery dead on, and been off on the age by only a small bit. Overall, this was a super cool dram to review, especially blind, given how much of a legendary status this dram has commanded since release.
