Review #936 – Knob Creek Single Barrel Reserve Rye, “Brown Butter Cookie” Wine and Whiskey Country Selection

Review #936 | /r/Bourbon Review #494 – Knob Creek Single Barrel Reserve Rye Brown Butter Cookie Wine and Whiskey Country Selection

The Schtick: This was a bottle that I tried blind and I reviewed it live on the Whiskey Network Discord server, then got the reveal in order to fill in relevant details here.

Distiller: Beam

Bottler: Beam

ABV: 57.5% ABV

Age: 6 Years 6 Months

Barrel: 6477

Warehouse:Floor Z-7

Rack and Tier: 34/2

Barreled On: 11/21/2011

Bottled On: 5/24/2018

Nose: Honey, toffee, some light oak. Sweet and syrupy, only faint heat. No real fruitiness or overwhelming spice, sticking almost exclusively to sweet notes like cream, honey, toffee and nougat.

Taste: Thin to medium mouth feel. Solid heat, definitely present. Honey, clove, pretty apparent fruitiness here. Apples, pears, light clove, some pepper. Odd faint astringency, but not overwhelming. Tastes a hair on the young side, some grainy notes, some clove and pepper.

Finish: Short to medium, some fairly prominent heat. Clove, pepper, some orange peel, faint spice.

Overall + Guess: This is nice, but runs a bit hotter than I would like. Seems a hair young. Nice fruits, the spice seems to be telling. The nose was probably my favorite part. I’m going to guess this is WT distillate, either a Kentucky Spirit release or maybe something like Ripy, if I’m remembering the proof right. Guessing this is 5-7 years old, 50% ABV to 53% ABV.

Reveal: Knob Creek Single Barrel Reserve Rye “Brown Butter Cookie”, Wine and Whiskey Country Selection. I feel pretty good about this reveal in that I got the age right on, proof close and generally thought this leaned in the spicy rye direction although I wavered and tagged it as a Turkey. Lots more to learn about these Knob Creek Single Barrels.

Thanks for reading!
