2018 Rye Guide

This is a basic introduction into the common producers of rye in North America, and a list of where their rye ends up. It will be updated as time progresses. If you see an error, please feel free to contact me.

It is my belief that there are roughly three major “rye profiles” in the products released in North America. They are as such:

  • The MGP/LDi Profile: Minty, Dill Forward
  • The Alberta Profile: Brown sugar, honey, lavender, orange zest, toffee
  • Buffalo Trace / Barton / Brown-Forman: Herbal, brown sugar, clove

If you may already be feeling your undergarments bunching, I would like to declare now, that this is a rough approximation used to illustrate and speak to the generalities in these three producers. It is by no means fully comprehensive, set in stone, and the end all be all. Many specific ryes can embody all sorts of profiles, especially based on blends, specific casks and mashbills, but if I had to pick three major circles to create a Venn with, these are those three.
