Hey folks! First wine digest here, for the week of May 9th to May 15th, 2020. Let’s get into it. Feel free to leave me feedback, or make a request if there is something you’d like to see covered here.
Best Wine: Laboure-Gontard Brut, Burgundy, Sparkling
Bonkers good sparkling. Dry, crisp, lots of stone fruit and prudent acidity. On the bubblier side of things, but pairing well with the minerality and superb dryness. Paired well with homemade pizza, and Alison Roman’s Caramelized Shallot Pasta.
– Two thumbs up, $15.
The Other Wines
2018 Latitud 42 Rioja
Juicy and bright, featuring more heavy handed tannins then I’d have expected from a Rioja this young. Nice viscosity, medium body. Lightly acidic, heavily tannic. Plum, pepper, currants. Opened up really well with 3-4 hours rest. Paired with chef’s chicken salad.
– Middle of the road, $14.
2018 Quinta Da Aveleda Vinho Verde
Vinho weather is here. Paired with chicken stir fry and steak fajitas. Crisp, bright. Thin on the palate, crisp on the back palate. More sweet than mineral, a bit syrupy. Medium acidity. Short finish with sweet, tart departure.
– Thumbs up, $<10.
That’s all for this week, folks.
Overall, a little bit of this, a little bit of that. The sparkling was easily my favorite, followed by the Vinho. The Latitud was fine, but I’ve enjoyed some of their other expressions far more. This weekend we have a fun Tempranillo on deck, which I’ll be looking forward to chatting about next week.
